'Pathways I' - Large Handmade Collagraph/Monoprint

'Pathways I' is an experimental work, exploring the combined effect of texture-based collagraph printmaking with layers of vibrant monoprinted colours. It is inspired by my fascination with aerial maps and photographs - these allow me to roam places and landscapes near and far, some familiar to me, others not. Such virtual journeys result in an accumulation of shapes and patterns that subsequently emerge in studio-based printmaking. 'Pathways I' is a multi-level print, with a layering of shape, pattern and colour elements adding both harmony and contrast.

Monoprinting is somewhere between printing and painting. It is printmaking because the ink is applied to a plate and then transferred to paper in a printing press, rather than being applied directly to paper. However it is similar to painting because the plate is typically just a flat surface (e.g. a sheet of perspex) and ink is painted on to it with a brush or roller. The image can be built up in many layers and it is easy to use stencils, templates or masks to apply colour only where you want it. This more painterly approach generally means monoprints are all unique, they cannot be identically repeated, they are not editioned, and are numbered 1 of 1 (i.e. an edition of 1).
